Most armies now employ units of crossbowman, due to the power and effectiveness of this weapon. The range of a crossbow is considerably shorter than that of a bow, and they are more difficult to reload. Crossbowmen are typically most useful from an entrenched position, therefore. Crossbowmen are mercenaries, warriors for hire, and like archers, they want hand-to-hand support to prevent enemies reaching them. At close quarters, they are far less effective. Given a little distance, their weapons can punch through most armor, even that of a knight. This is a non-magical guild.
