It helps the user to avoid drowning, as well as reduces the energy required to move through (or over) deep water. This skill does not prevent drowning if you are submerged beneath the water, only if you are on the surface. I.E. on the surface of the ocean, rather than deep beneath the waves A succesful swim check prevents the swimmer from dropping beneath the surface, at which point drowning commences. Skill Usage
