Because of the intricate movement required to wield the chain, the user must remain an open target in order to perform the stratagem. If the maneuver is successfully executed, the Shih avoids an incoming strike, manages to snare one of the opponent's limbs -- setting up that limb for a world of hurt in the process -- and strikes back at the opponent, all in one smooth-flowing action.
