There are very large spaces between dungeons, cities, islands, and other places and these are classified as parts of the "outerworld." This terrain is often dangerous because other beings inhabit it. To see the terrain around you on the planet you're on, type map (HELP MAP). If you can't see a map, you're probably not in the outerworld. NOTE: Being outsides does not equate to being on the outerworld! Outerworld is a loose term for the very large external terrain that all areas are placed on. Castles can only be built in the Outerworld (HELP CASTLES). Overland movement is taxing. Each square on the map is approximately 40 square miles. Therefore, moving over terrain will cause you to run out of endurance points. However, there are several factors that affect overland movement: SIZE: Being very large makes moving through some terrains easier. Being very small makes it harder. FLYING: Flying costs 1 EP regardless of what terrain you're flying over. It costs EP to fly with wings, it doesn't cost any EP to fly magically. TERRAIN: Some terrains cost more EP than others. Mountains cost the most, roads cost nothing. NATURAL TERRAIN: The terrain that your race is most comfortable with. Races that are used to living in the mountains are not as impaired by them. HOME WORLD: The world from which your race hails. You are much more likely to have experience traveling over a terrain from your home world, reducing the cost. SWIMMING: If you're in water, swimming becomes your means of movement. It costs more EPs the larger you are. SKILLS: The various survival skills train you in moving through that specific terrain, reducing cost. Newbies do not suffer movement costs. |
