Scars can be gained in several ways, most commonly by dying although some
skills or spells may leave scars as well.  They hinder your character while
he is alive, reducing his stats.  They also affect him in death, by making
praying and resurrection harder and increasing his penalties for death
itself.  Fortunately, there are spells to remove scars.
