ALT--abbreviation for: 'Alternate Character'

Players often have multiple characters, one of which is usually deemed
the 'primary' character, and all subsequent or lesser characters are
deemed an 'alt'. Note that at no time are alternative characters permitted
to be in use at the same time.
Note: you cannot have multiple characters on at the same time.
